Julie- Jaye Charles
Julie is a Disabled Parent; she is the sole Founder of EQUALITIES.
Over the past 9 years, her energies have been focused on developing recognized, sustainable, local and national BME disabled people and carer’s driven strategies. Julie advises on a variety of boards, all of which have of course benefited from her entrepreneurial style and wealth of grass roots knowledge.
“In my experience I truly believe EQUALITIES is at the cutting edge of Breaking into the seams of what I would say has certainly been a mighty tough bureaucratic process and understanding of us (black and minority ethnic communities and disabled people), with sometimes multiple needs and no structure to deal with us holistically. This, I add has brought about multiple disadvantage, barriers to service provision and a lack of responsibility and understanding of our needs and requirements.”
“Being able to have sustained many knocks and set backs, we truly are emerging as the National Strategic Body, I intend to support the most deprived community in our society today.”
Since developing firm partnerships with Government Departments and Agencies I can tell you that we are now being taken seriously and our existence as a National Council for Disabled People and carers is accepted.
Based within the London Borough of Waltham Forest, Equalities is the only Advocacy service specifically targeting black and minority ethnic disabled people and carers, and those with mental health difficulties and long term impairments. Furthermore, it is actively engaged in making national representation on these issues. In addition it is the only National BME disabled peoples and carers organisation of its kind, unique in that it is run for its users by its users, and is highly respected nationally.
As an enterprising and dynamic group of disabled people and carers with a common vision, all coming from the community, all having previously been on benefits, incapacity, jobseekers allowance or income support and all share the same “mission.”
One of our staff team stated “I was never given a chance to prove what I am capable of doing until now, and I don’t even feel embarrassed heating my “country” food up in the microwave for lunch… because we all do it.
